FREIRAUM Salon #8
6 apr 2023

Under the topic: “Artist-Run-Spaces, Networking Art Venues”, the FREIRAUM Salon #8 took place. Our guests were Spacelab Essen (Sabina Stücker and Fang Yun Lu), Tanz Station – Barmer Bahnhof (Thusnelda Mercy, Pascal Merighi and Angela Köneke), Spinnerei Schwelm (Kattrin Deufert and Thomas Plischke) and Kunsthaus Mitte Oberhausen (Thomas Lehmen).

The meeting wanted to bring together places that provide spaces for artists*, develop programs and offer a platform for exchange and creation. With this salon we developed a common voice in the sense of artist empowerment, networked and were able to share knowledge and practice in an open exchange of experiences.

Space LAB is a research and co-working space in Essen. The former department store in downtown Essen has been used by Polymer DMT / Fang Yun Lo as an office and stage design warehouse since 2021. As a co-working space, it is open to all colleagues of IG Tanz Essen – independent groups, choreographers, dancers and performance artists from Essen and the surrounding area. spacelab

Tanz Station – Barmer Bahnhof will start as a funded project from 11/2020. During this period, the course will be set with various formats and offers for the independent professional dance and cultural scene. Following the “principle of the train station”, where people arrive, depart, stay, new contacts are made and all nationalities meet, we see ourselves with a focus on dance as a coworking space and community, where connection, development, collaboration and support are lived. https://tanz-station.de/

Spinnerei Schwelm. Near Wuppertal, deufert&plischke have been establishing a place for experimental art for all here since fall 2021. In the Spinnerei, many things that characterize their practice always come together: for example, the invitation to play, to exchange, or transparency and generosity in the creation of a shared (art) space that allows for fragility and softness and to which one entrusts one’s secrets, wishes, and dreams. https://www.spinnereischwelm.net/

Kunsthaus Mitte Oberhausen works at the society/art interface by providing spaces for individual artistic activities and cultivating a public program. This includes activities in the fields of music, film, dance, sculpture, painting and performance. The non-contradictory coexistence of free art practice and an art practice accessible to all interested parties has created a place for people with the most diverse ideas. http://www.kunsthausmitte.de
